The GOMEX corer is constructed entirely of stainless steel and weighs only 36 kg without ballast. The corer may be stored on a small stand (optional), measuring 40 x 45 x 55 cm high that supports the weight trays. The stand keeps the corer in the open position prior to coring, and both can be carried by two people when necessary.

The corer consists of four interconnected functional units: the sample box (25 x 25 x 50 cm), the exterior fixed-support framework, the structural linkage that attaches the vertical sliding bar to close the spades and the release mechanism. The weight trays are designed to hold several lead weights on each side. The lead serves as both ballast and the driving force that closes and holds the spades in the closed position.
